Why I No Longer Practice Heavy Weightlifting

For decades, weightlifting, also known as ‘lifting heavy weights’, has been a popular form of exercise. However, after years of practicing this type of workout, I have turned to other forms of exercise. In this post, I will elaborate on the risks involved with heavy weightlifting, the advantages of alternative types of exercises, and my personal experience with weightlifting.

Part 1: Potential Risks Associated with Heavy Weightlifting

Although heavy weightlifting can be beneficial, it is not safe for everyone. The most common injuries associated with this form of exercise are to the back, shoulders, and knees. Consistent heavy lifting can cause strain on joints and muscles, leading to long-term damage to tendons and ligaments. Continuing to lift heavy weights despite experiencing pain or injury may cause irreversible damage, leading to surgery, which is often the last resort for such serious injuries.

Part 2: Advantages of Alternative Exercises

While weightlifting can increase strength, there are several alternative types of exercises that can do the same without the associated risks. Cardiovascular exercise, such as running or cycling, enhances strength while also promoting cardiovascular health. Yoga and Pilates, with a focus on body control, flexibility, and core strength, may be preferred by those who wish to benefit from low-impact exercises. Additionally, bodyweight exercises, such as push-ups, lunges, and squats, can be used to gain muscle mass without the need to lift heavy weights.

Part 3: My Experience with Heavy Weightlifting

As someone who used to be an avid weightlifter, I began to experience chronic pain in my back and shoulders. After consulting with a doctor, it turned out that I had a rotator cuff injury. I decided to stop weightlifting to allow my body to heal and to try other forms of exercise. Since then, I have discovered that alternative exercises, such as cardio and bodyweight workouts, offer the same benefits without the risk of injuries associated with heavy weightlifting. I have enjoyed greater flexibility, muscle tone, and cardiovascular health.


While weightlifting can undoubtedly increase strength, the risks involved outweigh the benefits. Alternative types of exercises can provide the same benefits with a lower risk of injury. For individuals seeking to engage in weightlifting or any other type of exercise, it is crucial to consult with a doctor before starting any new exercise regimen and determine which exercise is best suited for their goals and body type.
